Biography

Abdullah Afedzi is a versatile, proactive and dynamic award winning ocean and environment journalist who works as a freelance with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Ghana. His over seven years of journalism experience has seen him written on a wide range of issues relating to gender, human rights and politics with the intention of promoting moral values, strong family life, interfaith cooperation and international harmony in his country. He has also written extensively on the ocean, fisheries and the environment. As a member of the Ghana Journalist Association (GJA) and Founding member of the Journalist for Responsible Fisheries and Environment (JRFE), Afedzi has at all times exemplified good journalistic standards. Guided by values such as truth, accuracy, speed, fairness and professionalism, he has worked towards achieving high laurels in his career as a journalist by honing his interpersonal skills, leadership ability and gaining hands-on experience. In 2018, he was adjudged best ocean reporter by the Earth Journalism Network (EJN) under its West Africa Fisheries Journalism Project. In the same year, he was adjudged best news reporter by the Central Region branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA). He was the runner up in the Crime and Court reporting and Fisheries reporting categories respectively. Afedzi has participated in a number of national and international training workshops. Key among them are the Reuters Foundation training workshop on Modern Day Slavery and Human Trafficking in Nigeria, Earth Journalism Network Fisheries Reporting training workshop in Ghana and Data Journalism training workshop organised by Penplusbyte for African journalists in 2017. He has as well participated in several conferences which includes the World Export Development Forum in Ethiopia in 2019, Africa Youth Governance Convergence, also in 2019, and the maiden conference on Occupational Health and Safety in 2018. Afedzi also practice as an Occupational, Safety and Health Communications Consultant and is a research fellow with the Health and Safety Group Africa (HESAG). Afedzi is an Mphil candidate at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) reading Development Studies and holds BA Journalism degree from the Jayee University College in Accra, Ghana.
