Biography

I'm Aishwaria Sonavane, a Researcher for Pakistan Studies at the Takshashila Institution, with a broader regional focus on Afghanistan and India. My work centers on building nuanced scholarship on Pakistan while fostering a deeper understanding of foreign policy, counter-militancy/insurgency, the military-politics nexus, and identity-based politics. I have extensive experience covering jihadist and militant outfits in the region, including transnational groups like al-Qaeda and the Islamic State (IS), as well as organizations such as Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Baloch separatist groups, and anti-India Kashmiri outfits. My fortnightly newsletter, Pakistan Paigham, examines the country beyond the narrow prism of Indian foreign policy and security. I also host All Things Policy, our in-house podcast, once a month. Beyond my work on the Indian subcontinent, I'm fascinated by food anthropology and cultural histories. You’ll often find me wandering through art exhibits with the unbeaten pretense of a connoisseur.
