Alec Meeker is publisher and CEO of Bushwick Daily. A graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, Alec is building platforms for sustainable community journalism. People who live in Brooklyn can’t find in-depth local community news. Most local publications have gone out of business, the majority of the remaining publications are in Manhattan who have lots of journalists but few reporters going out into the field to cover the news or connect with sources. The local news that remains does not serve the community. Driven by shallow rewriting of press releases, crime blotters, and broad stroke political coverage, the New York local news ecosystem is totally detached from the communities that it serves. Bushwick Daily provides 100% local, in-depth news and culture reporting powered by the community. Our stories are authentic and original because we engage with and build relationships within the communities we report on which has earned us a loyal and engaged audience. We meet our audience where they’re at by consistently publishing five days a week and sharing on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and our newsletter.
