Biography
I am a professional science journalist and science communicator currently residing in Bristol. I am currently in a full-time role as Scientific Digital Communications Editor for a FTSE 100 company. I have been a freelance science writer, journalist and editor since 2000 and have written news and features for a variety of specialist and general publications, including New Scientist, Nature, BBC Online, as well as for the Times, Telegraph and Independent and a host of other print and online outlets, from Spectrum News to Euroscientist. From 2018 to 2020 I was the Editorial Manager (a part-time role) for fetfx.eu -- a website that focuses on EU-funded research into Future and Emerging Technolgies (FET). We won an award in 2018 for being fabulous! http://www.fetfx.eu/story/fetfx-the-laurel-is-yours/ From 2010 to 2017, I worked in corporate comms for BBSRC, one of the UK's Research Councils, on all forms of content from infographics to interactive features and video, directing and editing more than 70 videos for BBSRC's acclaimed YouTube channel. During my time at BBSRC I was also commissioning editor for the Global Food Security blog, a popular and well-regarded platform for all things related to agricultural food research, politics and policy. In addition to science writing and journalism, I write poems, lyrics, comics and other assorted content. Highlights include sexy short story 'Only in Your Dreams' which appeared in Nature's acclaimed Futures column in 2007. I then self-published an experimental novella, The Dolphin Man, online and in real-time, over 2008-09 on blog platform Wordpress. A new short story 'The Box', a proverbial account of a mythical-alien artefact, was shortlisted for the Light-Reading.org short story competition and was published in an anthology in September 2012. Frood's short play 'The Grateful Web' a dystopian take on networks shaping future lives, was also shortlisted for the 2012 Bristol Folk House Saturday Shorts Scriptwriting Competition. I also won a Runners-up prize for his story in the 2014 microFutures competition (a story in 200 characters or less) published by Nature magazine. From 2015 I have also had short comics published in The Psychedelic Journal of Time Travel, The Bristol Bear Pit zine, and FutureQuake. I have also written a radio play, The Tobacco Parliaments, and am 200 pages into my first graphic novel.
