Biography
Bobby Black is one of the most recognized and respected figures in marijuana media. In a celebrated career spanning over two decades, the former senior editor of High Times wrote over a hundred columns, starred in nearly a hundred podcasts, interviewed dozens of entertainment icons and left behind an indelible, enduring legacy within America’s cannabis counterculture. An introverted kid from Brooklyn, New York, Black discovered his parents' collection of classic rock vinyl at the age of ten. Upon opening Black Sabbath’s gatefold Paranoid album and seeing the ominously appealing figures pictured within, he knew instantly what he wanted to become. He started growing his hair long by eleven, smoked his first joint at twelve, got drunk for the first time at thirteen, and was in his first mosh pit by the age of fifteen. After graduating high school a year early, he attended Baruch College in New York—majoring in Marketing/Advertising and minoring in Graphic Design. Then in 1994, at the start of his senior year, Black learned from a classmate that High Times magazine was looking for an intern and asked her to set up an interview. Later that day, wearing a Led Zeppelin t-shirt and ripped jeans—and with no resume or portfolio prepared—he went to the High Times offices and met with the publisher. He was hired on the spot, and the trajectory of his life changed forever. Over the next decade, he was promoted several times and wrote the occasional article, but felt he was destined for more than laboring behind the scenes. His big chance came in 2004 when, after High Times had taken the weed out of the magazine and was on the verge of bankruptcy, management turned to the staff to loyal revive the brand. Black seized the opportunity to pitch his own monthly column called Almost Infamous. Based loosely on the concept of the movie Almost Famous, Almost Infamous chronicled the gonzo adventures of an average pohead who—armed only with a joint, a leather jacket and a High Times business card—lives out every stoner’s fantasies and becomes a “pot star.” And live them out he did. In his 21 years at the magazine, he met, interviewed and/or got high with countless counterculture icons, such as Ozzy Osbourne, Snoop Dogg, Cypress Hill and Cheech and Chong, as well as rock legends like Rush, members of The Doors, Pantera, System of a Down and Queens of the Stone Age. He partied with the sexiest women on the planet, including Tera Patrick, Jenna Jameson, Adrianne Curry, Tila Tequila and dozens of Penthouse Pets and porn stars. He appeared on The Howard Stern Show, Headbangers’ Ball, Geraldo at Large, as well as the History Channel, CNN and NBC. He tripped balls at Burning Man, got tattooed on a tour bus backstage at Lollapalooza, produced a rock compilation for High Times Records, and judged an air guitar competition alongside Andrew W.K. and The Daily Show’s Jason Jones. He hosted six High Times Doobie Awards shows, three Miss High Times pageants and a nationwide stoner rock show on Sirius XM radio. His visage was made into a tattoo, a tarot card and a comic-book superhero. He smoked just about everything there is to smoke in just about every way there is to smoke it—including a joint rolled in 24K gold and a bong mounted in a porn star’s ass. Hell, he even ran for president. All of this—and much more—was documented in print and on video with his own unique style of gonzo journalism. It’s no wonder that many consider him “the most infamous stoner in the world.” But alas, nothing lasts forever. In late 2015, citing disagreements with management about the direction of the company’s future and his role therein, Black left High Times—and his hometown of New York City—and moved to California to begin the next chapter in his long and legendary cannabis career. There, he began hosting his own potcast Blazin’ With Bobby Black (ReVolver Podcasts, Cannabis Radio), worked as West Coast Editor for Greenleaf Magazine, launched three editions of Sensi Magazine (LA, OC, and San Diego) as their SoCal Editor, and served as COO of Crockett Family Farms, one of the most respected and award-winning cannabis genetics and cultivation brands in the world. More recently, he was hand-picked to become the executive director of the upcoming World of Cannabis Museum and last year launched a new monthly column and podcast about cannabis history called Cannthropology, which is currently being developed for television. In the years to come, as cannabis continues its march into mainstream acceptance and profitability, the demand for marijuana-related content and entertainment will grow exponentially—and no one is as ready, eager and qualified to generate that content as Bobby Black. So while his daze at High Times might be over, Bobby’s highest times are surely yet to come.
