Biography

I'm an investigative reporter at LNP | LancasterOnline focused on disinformation, domestic violent extremism and threats to democracy. My work connects fringe figures, dark money groups, political funders and elected officials. In April 2023 LNP became part of the NPR member station WITF in Harrisburg. As a result, WITF republishes my work and airs my audio stories. I'm an occasional contributor to NPR and public radio stations around Pennsylvania. Prior to working at LNP, I was a health reporter at WITF for more than five years. My work often focused on the intersections between mental health services, law enforcement and the legal system. In 2021 I was selected for the prestigious Benjamin von Sternenfels Rosenthal investigative mental health fellowship, a collaboration between Reveal and the Rosalynn Carter Fellowships for Mental Health Journalism. My fellowship project, a 10-month investigation into Pennsylvania county jails, found that prison staff frequently respond with violent force to people having a mental health crisis. My stories have helped get a woman with schizophrenia out of jail, revealed that dozens of police officers had joined the Oath Keepers militia and held powerful health systems and state authorities accountable during the chaotic first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. I earned six regional Edward R. Murrow awards while at WITF. My Carter fellowship work was recognized nationally by the Association of Health Care Journalists and Military Veterans in Journalism. Prior to working at WITF, I was a business reporter at York Daily Record, where I was recognized for investigations into food safety and nuclear waste. I was one of the first reporters to identify business irregularities at a local fiber optics company founded by the 90s rock band +LIVE+, where the company's CEO would later be charged with fraud and theft. My perspective as a reporter is enriched by work I've done prior to my journalism career. I worked on a research team in the Gulf of Mexico in the months after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. I managed a motorcycle safety training site in Long Beach, CA where we developed and tested new courses before they were rolled out to the public. And I served as a Pennsylvania Army National Guard (U. S. Army) infantry soldier in Kosovo.
