Biography

Charles Duncan is a national reporter with McClatchy News, specializing in breaking news, politics and the stories of the day from his perch just blocks from the ocean in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. His work is featured daily in McClatchy newspapers and websites across the county, including the Miami Herald, The Charlotte Observer, The Kansas City Star and the Sacramento Bee. He landed in South Carolina as the senior editor for The Sun News, McClatchy’s daily, where he ran a small team of reporters covering Myrtle Beach and the surrounding area. He got to learn first-hand why the beach town earned the name Murder Beach while leading a talented team of young reporters. In 2008, Duncan founded Raleigh Public Record in and ran the operation as editor and executive director (and chief cook and bottle washer) for six years before handing it off to new leadership. He brought the organization from an all-volunteer force to having an annual budget of more than $100,000. Burned out from running the Record while working a day job and going to grad school part time, Duncan took a job as a reporter specializing in data and investigations in the Cayman Islands. While working as a reporter for the daily Cayman Compass newspaper, he also managed to finish up his master’s degree at Duke University and welcome a son into the world. He also got hooked on scuba diving. Duncan got his real start in journalism in a New York City jail when he ended up being arrested while covering the protests at the 2004 Republican National Convention for Technician, the N.C. State University student newspaper. Duncan received degrees from Wake Tech in 2003, N.C. State in 2005, a certificate in documentary studies from the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University in 2007, and a MA from Graduate Liberal Studies at Duke in 2015.
