Biography

Chris Young is a reporter for the Center’s Consider the Source project, where he focuses on the influence of money in state and federal courts. Before joining the Center as an American University Fellow in September 2012, he worked for five years as a reporter for Pittsburgh City Paper, the Steel City’s alternative weekly newspaper. A staffer since he graduated from Duquesne University in 2007, Chris covered education, neighborhoods and politics for the paper. A number of his stories won first-place awards from the Press Club of Western Pennsylvania, including an investigative piece that revealed problematic billing practices at the Pittsburgh Water & Sewer Authority and a story that documented the difficulties of diagnosing and treating bipolar disorder in children. Chris earned his master’s degree in journalism and public affairs from American University in August 2013.

The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press

The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press (RCFP) is a nonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C., established in 1970 to defend press freedoms and First Amendment rights. It provides pro bono legal services, resources, and advocacy to protect journalists' rights and ensure public access to information. RCFP operates as a legal defense organization for journalists, documentary filmmakers, and news organizations. It addresses challenges such as government subpoenas, source protection, and public records access. The organization offers direct legal representation, files amicus curiae briefs in significant cases, and maintains a 24/7 legal hotline for journalists. Additionally, it conducts training programs on media law and provides localized support through its Local Legal Initiative in several states. RCFP also publishes legal guides and offers fellowships and internships for aspiring media professionals.
