I’ll be honest, I stumbled into writing almost entirely out of desperation. I was always what teachers would categorize as a “good writer” but I didn’t have the attention span to write a whole book and my aversion to calling people on the phone (yes, how Millennial of me) ruled out being an investigative journalist, so how would I ever make a career out of writing? Thankfully, as naive younger me would find out, there are an endless number of ways that writing can benefit the world. As any good thing though, it didn’t come easy. In an attempt to scrape together enough money to move out of my parents’ house, I spent months after my college graduation applying to every job that had “writer” even vaguely in the title. Finally, after over 100 applications, a small-time (back then) personal finance blog hired me as a staff writer. Fast forward 7 years and I’ve been everything from a Senior Editor to a digital marketing specialist to a full-time writer within the personal finance realm and beyond. Along the way, I’ve accomplished a lot: Worked up from a staff writer to the Senior Editor for that small-time blog that grew to be a popular, well-known financial blog. During that time, I led a small team of editors, worked with up to 25 writers at once, provided key SEO components to briefs and published pieces, and helped grow a substantial network of brand partners. Written content that helps promote financial literacy for the LGBTQIA+ community. As a member of this community who struggled for a long time to find financial info that applied to my life, I pride myself on writing large batches of LGBTQIA+-based content that explains how to access health care, housing, reproductive care, family planning funding, military benefits, and more. Started writing about how sustainability can help promote financial (and environmental) health. It all started with a simple blog post I was assigned about the price of tiny houses. From there, the sustainable living movement began to make more sense. From the art I create to the content on saving and budgeting I write, I try to include a sustainable lens, focusing on how it can produce a smaller carbon footprint as well as monthly financial obligations. Grew my skills to include digital marketing, AI writing, best SEO practices, and affiliate work. Since I’ve been on both sides of Expanded my writing to include niches such as health and medical writing, marijuana writing, and real estate. While I’ll always be grateful that personal finance was my stepping stone into the blogging industry, there are so many topics to explore that I find fascinating. In the last few years, I’ve written for medical blogs focused on helping doctors, blogs reviewing, discussing, and educating folks on the marijuana industry, and real estate blogs about investing, owning, and renting real estate. All this is to say: I write content that talks to the reader rather than just to Google. That solves a problem but in a real, human way. That is simply fun. I don’t know how to write (or edit or create marketing copy) in any other way.
