Chilango
Chilango Mex-Tex is a new restaurant slated to open early February of 2024 in the iconic Calhoun Beach Club overlooking Lake Bde Maka Ska in the Cedar Isles neighborhood of South Minneapolis. The Chilango team is led by its co-owner, James Beard Finalist, Chef Jorge Guzmán. Chilango, meaning someone who was born in Mexico City, as Guzmán was, pairs his passion of sharing the cuisine and culture of his youth growing in the Yucatán, with the familiarity and versatility of Tex-Mex, presented in Guzmán's trademark style of creating "wow" dishes that remain exceedingly approachable. The menu will offer "elevated Mex-Tex" which is a spin Guzmán created on the popular Tex-Mex category. The "Tex" in the Mexican-influenced menu will provide the opportunity to do some exciting and approachable dishes not found at a traditional Mexican restaurant. The bar program will also play into the Mex-Tex experience, with a focus on a variety of unique tequilas, frozen drinks, Mexican beers, and playful cocktails. The space will be redesigned in partnership with design and architecture firm Nelson, featuring eye-catching custom murals from Mexican artist Rodrigo Oñato, unique found objects from Guzmán's travels, and plenty of patina. After the initial interior remodel, Guzmán has plans to overhaul the nearly 100 seat patio overlooking picturesque Lake Bde Maka Ska. Chilango's patio will be a tranquil oasis that will be heavily influenced by the beachside restaurants of Guzmán's youth growing up in Merida in the Yucatan Peninsula.
