Columbia Daily Spectator
The Columbia Daily Spectator is the independent student newspaper of Columbia University, established in 1877. It is the second-oldest continuously operating college daily in the U.S. and has been financially independent from the university since 1962. Originally a literary magazine, it transitioned to a daily newspaper in 1902 and has adapted to changing media landscapes by prioritizing digital content since 2014. The newspaper publishes digital news five days a week during the academic year, along with a weekly print edition distributed to over 5,000 locations in Morningside Heights. Its core offerings include daily news covering campus events, arts, sports, and opinion pieces, as well as a weekly online magazine called The Eye, which focuses on arts and culture. The Spectator also features Spectrum, a service journalism blog providing guides on housing, academics, and life in New York City. The publication serves Columbia University students, faculty, staff, and local residents, maintaining a strong commitment to independent journalism.
