The Daily Tar Heel

The Daily Tar Heel is the independent, nonprofit student newspaper of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, established in 1893. It has been a vital source of journalism and community news in Orange County for over 130 years. The newspaper operates independently, relying on advertising revenue since it ceased accepting student fees in 1993. The Daily Tar Heel offers comprehensive news coverage on local, national, and international topics, with a focus on issues pertinent to the UNC-Chapel Hill community. It circulates 10,000 free print copies each Wednesday during the academic year across more than 200 locations in Chapel Hill, Carrboro, Chatham, and Durham. The newspaper also has a robust online presence, attracting an average of 11,400 unique visitors per school day. Additionally, it engages with the community through events and initiatives, such as the UNC baseball Student Home Run Derby, while providing a platform for student journalists to hone their skills.
