Oerther (pronounced O' thur) is a Professor of Environmental Health Engineering at the Missouri University of Science and Technology and an Academic Member of the Society for Environmental Journalists. Prior to joining Missouri S&T, Dan taught at the University of Cincinnati, where he served as Head of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Dan was a Foreign Affairs Officer and served as the Senior Science Advisor in the Secretary’s Office of Global Food Security at the United States Department of State. He was a Fulbright Scholar to England, Fulbright-ALCOA Distinguished Chair to Brazil, and Fulbright-Pai Endowed Professorship / Fulbright-Nehru Visiting Scholar, both to India. Currently, Dr. Oerther is employed part-time as the Executive Director of the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists. As a science communicator, Dr. Oerther is known for reporting on interprofessional education and modified mastery learning, including the V-shaped profession of the nurse+engineer. As a researcher, he is known for community-based participatory research improving access to clean water and nutritious food, local to global, through sustainable technology and improved social contracts. Professor Oerther is a licensed Professional Engineer. He is Board Certified in Environmental Engineering as well as Environmental Science.
