Biography

David Alandete is a Spanish journalist and editor with more than 20 years of experience in written media, radio and television. His work on disinformation and cybersecurity has been quoted in reports by the European Union, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, the Parliament of the United Kingdom and the United States Senate. Through his work as a foreign correspondent for Spain’s leading newspapers, Mr. Alandete has interviewed several world leaders, businesspeople and academics. Between 2014 and 2018, as the Managing Editor at Spain’s leading daily El País, he grew online audiences by 40%, reaching more than 100 million unique browsers and bringing the newspaper to the top of the most read newspapers in Spanish in the world. He also launched the English and Brazilian editions of El País. In 2017, Alandete assembled and led an investigative team that covered the Russian meddling campaign in the Catalan independence crisis and the Italian elections, among other governance crises. He introduced tools to combine data mining, data brokerage and data analysis for strategic reporting on politics. He currently researches and monitors the spread of disinformation targeted towards Latin America and the Hispanic population in the United States. Mr. Alandete has been invited for conferences and workshops in disinformation by the European Parliament, the Atlantic Council, the Aspen Institute and the Thomson Reuters Foundation. He is a member of the network of experts against disinformation affiliated with the Atlantic Council. As the first digital managing editor of El País, Mr. Alandete led and implemented the digital transformation strategy at the newspaper, establishing and monitoring KPIs within the company. In two years, the team that he led grew its mostly digital audience from 45 million to 100 million unique browsers throughout the world, with a special increase in Latin American readership, especially in the United States, Mexico and Brazil. Mr. Alandete led joint news projects with the main online distribution platforms, including Facebook, Google and Amazon. His efforts expanded readership through search, social and mobile channels, with a strong focus on storytelling and innovation.
