Biography

David Crary has been a reporter, editor and bureau chief with The Associated Press since 1976. From 1999 to 2021, he was an AP national writer based in New York, primarily writing feature stories about volatile social issues _ abortion, LGBTQ rights, prison conditions, divorce and domestic violence, among others. He now directs AP's global religion team. Crary joined the AP in Mississippi, later worked in Colorado and on the AP's international desk in New York, then covered East Africa and Southern Africa from 1985-1990 from bases in Nairobi, Kenya, and Johannesburg, South Africa. His assignments in Africa included the Ethiopian famine, the uprising against apartheid and Nelson Mandela's release from prison. From 1990-95, he was news editor at the AP's Paris bureau, overseeing coverage of France and North Africa, as well as serving nine tours of duty in Sarajevo during the Bosnian conflict of 1992-95. He was named bureau chief in Toronto in 1995 and transferred to New York in 1999. Crary received his undergraduate degree from Yale University and a master's degree from the Columbia University School of Journalism.
