Biography

I write about the complex financial topics few other journalists care to. I specialize in public pensions, investments, accounting and financial reporting, executive compensation, corporate governance and taxes. Today, I write for The Globe and Mail, the national newspaper of Canada. I've won nine national business journalism awards from the Society of American Business Editors and Writers (SABEW) as an individual or as member of a team and have been a finalist or winner three times in SABEW's Canadian contest. I was a finalist and a winner of Canada's National Newspaper Awards in 2022 and am a finalist for the 2022 Michener Award. An economics major, I ran multiple regressions to examine compensation, and I've been using Excel spreadsheets in my reporting for more than two decades. I was a "data journalist" years before the phrase became popular. I have taught seminars for journalists on securities filings, compensation and financial reporting at conferences of SABEW and Investigative Reporters & Editors. I am a user of the Bloomberg terminal, S&P CapitalIQ (Global Market Intelligence), Sentieo, Refinitiv Eikon, EDGAR, Canada's SEDAR and SEDI, and other databases. I also passed the Level I exam of the Chartered Financial Analyst program in December 2007. In addition to writing and analysis, I have the real-world management experience of serving as president of the Denver Press Club from 2016 to 2018. This was my second turnaround of the Club in just over a decade. The Press Club was insolvent when I became treasurer in 2006. By 2008, its debt was refinanced and its losses were cut. In 2016, I returned as president to solve a revenue problem and the Club is now more vital than it's been in years.
