Biography

Deb Gordon is a seasoned expert in in health care innovation, marketing, strategy, and growth. She advises health care start-ups and organizations on consumer engagement and innovation. She is currently researching and developing tools in consumer financial vulnerability and self-advocacy. She is also developing plans for a global review of health care consumerism. Her first book, The Health Care Consumer’s Manifesto: How to Get the Most for Your Money (Praeger 2020), showcases how Americans can reframe their health care spending as purchasing power to catalyze market-driven change. She has written for the Harvard Business Review blog, USA Today, RealClear Politics, TheHill, and others. From 2017 to 2019, Deb was a Senior Fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School’s Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and Government. Her research exploring market effectiveness and consumer behavior included a study of consumer shopping behavior and sentiment (in press at Journal of Participatory Medicine) and a machine learning analysis of the prevalence and nature of cost considerations documented in medical records, published in JAMA Network Open. Deb previously served as CEO of Voxent, a health technology and data firm providing medical record tools, data warehousing, and business intelligence to clients nationwide. She led the company’s turnaround strategy which resulted in its acquisition in 2016. For nearly a decade, Deb held executive roles, primarily as Chief Marketing Officer at Network Health, a nationally top-ranked Medicaid health plan. Under Deb’s leadership for marketing, strategy, business development, and product management, Network Health expanded its product assortment, had dramatic membership growth, and received more than 200 local, regional, and national awards, including the 2010 Top Leadership Teams in Healthcare award from Health Leaders Media. Before joining Network Health, Deb served as a category manager at Staples, principal of the Parthenon Group, and director of marketing and project manager at John Snow, Inc. (JSI)/Community Health Institute. Deb is an Aspen Institute Health Innovators Fellow and an Eisenhower Fellow, for which she traveled to Australia, New Zealand, and Singapore to explore the role of consumers in high-performing health systems. She judges in the Fierce Innovation Awards and volunteers in MIT’s Delta V start-up accelerator, the Boston University Questrom School of Business Health Sector Mentoring program, and the Society for Participatory Medicine. In 2011, Deb was recognized as a Boston Business Journal 40-under-40 honoree. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in bioethics from Brown University, and a Master of Business Administration with distinction from the Harvard Business School.
