Biography

Deborah Kennedy is a freelance journalist and fiction writer from Fort Wayne, Indiana. Her experience includes stints at a national theater magazine, a small-town community paper, and a weekly music rag. She's written about everything from cockfighting to Amish romance novels, zoning laws to Molly Ringwald and butt rock, not necessarily in that order. Her work has appeared in Salon, Good Housekeeping, The Oregonian, Willamette Week, The Establishment, The Hairpin, and The Los Angeles Review of Books, among others. Her debut novel, Tornado Weather, was nominated for an Edgar Allen Poe Best First Novel prize by the Mystery Writers of America, and in 2018 she was named Best Emerging Author by the Indiana Author Awards. Her short stories have appeared in The Hong Kong Review, The North American Review, Sou'wester, and Third Coast Magazine. She is a 2013 graduate of the University of Iowa Writers' Workshop, where she received her MFA in fiction writing. When Kennedy is not writing, she's teaching. She's taught literature, creative writing, and composition at a number of private and public universities, including Pacific Lutheran University, the University of Iowa, Hanover College, and Miami University. When she's not teaching, she's running or reading or baking. Kennedy loves weird things, weirder people, and baseball. Also dogs and Barbara Pym and Medieval curses. She lives in Forest Grove, Oregon with her mother and young son.
