Biography
Desiree Kane is a Miwok journalist and multimedia storyteller who has dedicated her career to amplifying the voices and stories of Indigenous communities. Her passion for movement journalism led her to spend most of 2016 at Oceti Sakowin Camp near the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation, documenting and organizing the media support services around #NoDAPL. Desiree's journalism work on the frontlines of social justice movements has been featured in a wide range of media outlets, including Yes! Magazine, Truth Out, and Earth Island Journal. She was also an Associate Producer, Camera Operator, and Investigative Journalist on the feature-length documentary film Akicita: The Battle of Standing Rock, which premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival. Desiree's documentary photography was featured in the New Mexico Museum of Indian Arts and Culture's Beyond Standing Rock exhibit, and her work has been published in outlets such as VICE News, Creative Loafing, and Shadowproof. She is also a live-media event producer, working with the Society of Environmental Journalists and organizing events with attendance numbers as big as 200,000 people like People's Climate March in 2017, Netroots Nation, and The People's Summit. Desiree's career paths have become self-reinforcing, with her journalistic work informing her event production and vice versa. Her events feature high-level speakers, politicians, artists, and other culture makers, including Presidential candidates Bernie Sanders and Martin O'Malley, alongside other Progressive leaders like Elizabeth Warren. Desiree's passion for social justice and storytelling has taken her around the world, from working with the Amerindian People's Association and the Rainforest Foundation in Guyana to documenting climate change adaptations in Nepal with the Jane Goodall Institute. She is also a proud member of the Charlotte Advisory Board of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and a co-founder of The PPL, which provided programming, services, space, and resources for unaccredited media makers covering the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, NC. While Desiree's journalism is at the forefront of her work, she is also known for her hashtag parties, attending the last shuttle launch with NASA, and her TEDx organizing. Her dedication to social justice, storytelling, and community-building has made her a force to be reckoned with.
