Biography

DJ Yap is the author of "Ethical Guide for Filipino Journalists," published in November 2021 by the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines, and a senior reporter covering politics and the legislature for the Philippine Daily Inquirer, the largest, most influential English-language daily newspaper in the Philippines. Mr. Yap completed his journalism degree at the University of the Philippines in 2014. A student journalist since grade school, he started work as a professional in the Inquirer’s research department in 2004. In 2005 he joined the reportorial pool, pounding the city beats of Manila before moving to national assignments, including the environment, defense, and foreign affairs. In November 2013 Mr. Yap traveled to Tacloban City to cover the arrival of what would turn out to be the world’s strongest typhoon on land, “Haiyan,” known locally as “Yolanda.” In 2014 he won an honorable mention for excellence in feature writing from the Hong Kong-based Society of Publishers in Asia for “Meeting a Monster," his personal essay on Haiyan. His series of reports on Haiyan won Best News Coverage for Print at the Catholic Mass Media Awards. Mr. Yap also received recognition for his reporting on the 2009 destruction of tropical storm “Ketsana” (“Ondoy”), the death and funeral of democracy icon Corazon Aquino, the 2010 Manila bus hostage crisis, and the aftermath of the deadly typhoon “Washi” (“Sendong”) in 2011. In September 2018 Mr. Yap was named a fellow of the East-West Center Senior Journalists Seminar. In February 2019, he was selected as Journalist of the Month by the International Journalists' Network, a project of the International Center For Journalists.
