Biography

Since the decade of the 90s, I have been writing newspaper journalism. Like most journalists, I started at my high school paper and climbed my way up from there. On the way, however, I took one slight detour. At university in Ames, I got interested in technology and film. I studied television and went on to work for the local NBC affiliate, WOI-TV, as Chyron operator and technical director. I moved from WOI to KWWL-TV in Waterloo, where I directed/technical directed the morning news. This was a pathetically-lowly position, that often required the director to direct, switch, run Chyron, & roll tapes while directing. It paid $5/hour. Covering farm reports and high school football was fun, but didn't really pay the bills. I went from there to floor direct, then direct the morning news at WDAF-TV in Kansas City. My hours were from 3 a.m. to 11 a.m. with some weekend nights. If the newscast went smoothly, the producers and the anchors got the credit. If there were mistakes, the directors heard about it. The editor of the Kansas City Business Journal was one of our frequent on-air contributors. If I wasn't directing that news hour, she and I would talk in the green room. She went on to hire me for regular freelance writing work when I finally left TV news for good. I also wrote for the Kansas City Star and "Review," a non-profit arts publication that supported the blossoming Kansas City arts community. I gained my Master's degree from UMKC in rhetoric and composition and was recruited from school to edit for an international labor union, the Boilermakers. After a year, I had the opportunity to move overseas to London, where I contracted for a business communications specialist, interviewing Fortune 500 CEOs for B2B publications on communication strategy. When I relocated back to the States in 2007, I landed in Connecticut. By this time, social media was exploding and blogs were just becoming the powerhouse they would be for driving customers to businesses and services. In the meantime, the local papers -- particularly in Connecticut, where towns are more like fiefdoms -- were shrinking and bleeding out staff. I self-trained in social media, SEO and digital content writing and took passion-work for our local paper, writing stories about student integration and bussing, zoning ordinances and housing, inland wetlands debates, dog parks and more. I loved returning to journalism. Even though I still do work for business in social media managing and SEO, my guiding principles are the ethical presentation of information.
