Biography

A freelance journalist, blogger, and photographer, Emily Chaffins' work has been featured in international and local publications including Flipboard, Catholic News Agency, Catholic Exchange, Catholic Vote's "The Loop," the Florida Catholic, and The Florida Book Review. She is the creator and curator of the Archdiocese of Miami's "Through the Catholic Lens" blog, which is all about rediscovering art and media through a Catholic worldview. She has received multiple journalism awards, including First Place in "Best reporting on Catholic education" (Spanish-language section) in the 2024 Catholic Media Awards. Emily is also a fiction writer and poet seeking out the adventure in the everyday through humor and a passion for storytelling. Her writing has been honored with multiple awards, including First Place for Undergraduate Fiction in the Florida International University Student Literary Awards (2023) and a Silver Key Award in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards (Humor Category, 2021). Her short story “Raspberry Cordial,” told in a recipe format and exploring themes about grief and family bonds, is forthcoming in issue 29.1 of The Windhover August 2025. Her poetry has been featured in Stirring: A Literary Collection. She earned an Associates of Arts degree at Miami Dade College; a Bachelor of Arts in English - Creative Writing at Florida International University; a Certificate in Professional and Public Writing at FIU; and is pursuing a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing at FIU.
