Biography
Erich Hoyt is the author of 25 books including Creatures of the Deep; Orca: The Whale Called Killer; Encyclopedia of Whales, Dolphins and Porpoises; The Earth Dwellers; Insect Lives; Marine Protected Areas for Whales, Dolphins and Porpoises; Extinction A-Z. He has written for National Geographic, the Sunday Times, the Guardian, BBC Wildlife, Defenders, Hakai and many other newspapers and magazines in the US, Canada and the UK. His books have been translated into 15 languages. Besides his writing, Hoyt has spent four decades researching whales to understand their daily lives and to protect their habitat in the oceans. As Research Fellow with the UK- & US-based Whale and Dolphin Conservation (WDC) since 2004, Hoyt leads its Healthy Seas Program. As part of his work for WDC, he co-chairs the IUCN Marine Mammal Protected Areas Task Force which is rolling out a global scientific tool systematically mapping the habitats for 130 species of marine mammals. With Russian scientists, Hoyt also initiated and co-directs research on killer whales, Baird’s beaked whales and humpback whales in the Russian Far East. He is an invited member of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Species Survival Commission’s Cetacean Specialist Group. Hoyt has co-authored more than 40 peer-reviewed scientific papers. Hoyt is a recipient of the Mandy McMath Conservation Award from the European Cetacean Society for his body of work on marine conservation. Among a dozen other awards, he was a Vannevar Bush Fellow in the Public Understanding of Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, twice a James Thurber Writer-in-Residence and has received awards for his articles and books. Hoyt’s research and public talks on whales, marine protected areas, ocean conservation and whale watching have taken him to every ocean and more than 60 countries. A Canadian-American dual citizen, he lives in Dorset, England, with his wife Sarah Wedden, a biomedical research scientist, and their children.
