Biography

An accountant by training, 'Femi Asu is an award-winning business journalist currently working for The Africa Report. A former News Editor at BusinessDay Media Limited and Assistant Business Editor at PUNCH Nigeria Limited, he has developed excellent reporting and editing skills in the last 12 years. In September 2014, Asu joined PUNCH, Nigeria’s most widely read newspaper, as a business correspondent, with specific focus on the energy (power and oil and gas) sector. he occasionally covered money and capital markets. In late 2012, he joined BusinessDay as an energy reporter. While he was there, he wrote numerous news stories and features; conducted interviews, and regularly produced the cover stories for the paper. Asu was a key contributor to the BusinessDay West Africa Energy, a pullout that was created to focus on the West African energy sector. He started out his journalism career when he was appointed the role of Campus Life correspondent for The Nation Newspapers in 2009. He worked for business consultancy, Toki Mabogunje & Co, from November 2011 to September 2012 as an administrative executive/junior consultant. In December 2018, Asu got two nominations at the Nigeria Media Merit Award 2018: Banking and Finance Report of the Year and Oil and Gas Reporter of the Year. He was named first runner-up in the Energy and Infrastructure Reporting category at Zimeo Excellence in Media Awards 2017, Addis Ababa, Ethiopa, on November 20, 2017. On October 28, 2017, he emerged Best Journalist (Oil and Gas Reporting) at the West Africa Media Excellence Awards 2017 in Accra, Ghana. He was named first runner-up in the 2017 Citi Journalistic Excellence Award at a ceremony organised by Citibank Nigeria Limited on June 23, 2017 in Lagos. On February 19, 2017, Asu emerged the Business Reporter of the Year at the Nigerian Writers Awards 2017. A year after he joined PUNCH, he won the CNN MultiChoice African Journalist of the Year Award for Economics and Business, 2015. In November 2009 and 2010, he was among the three nominees for the Award of Best Opinion Writer at the Coca-Cola/NBC Plc Campus Life Annual Awards. Asu has continued to hone his professional skills, attending writing courses, conferences and training in and outside Nigeria. He was at the Press Association, London, for the Advanced Financial Journalism Course in May 2015, and the School of Media and Communication, Pan-Atlantic University, Lagos, for the Advanced Writing and Reporting Skills course from March to June, 2015. He attended the 10th Global Investigative Journalism Conference, South Africa in November 2017.
