Biography
My main areas of interest are Open Source Software, Java, IOT, E-Commerce, Telecommunications and pro-competition regulation (like Antitrust Law enforcement and last-mile open access to ducts and poles in telecomms). I started using computers at around age eight - a TRS-80 Model III. Then went up to a Radio Shack Color Computer, then a Tandy Coco2. My eyes opened when I got a Commodore 64 and a Modem, and specially after I enjoyed the first GUI experience on a 8-Bit machine thanks to Berkeley Softworks' GEOS operating system. The local BBS scene was fun but the jump to CompuServe and Delphi was the true eye-opener about the potential of world-wide communications, by then accessed over ultra-expensive X.25 dial-up networks. Then came the jump to a 128-D and a a Commodore Amiga. By the time I used a PC, it was first an XT running MSDOS 3.31, then a 286 running Digital Research's DR-DOS 5.0, then a 386 running DR DOS 6.0, DesqView (multitasking on DOS!) and IBM OS/2 2.0 beginning in April 1992. Between 1995 and 1999 I hosted the "CD Writers and OS/2" FAQ and the "Java Apps and OS/2" FAQ on my personal hosting space at compuserve.com. I started writing about tech in 1999. The first outlet to run an article by me was OS2EZine.com. Then, in the UK came The Inquirer, beginning in late 2012. I worked for the INQ under the fierce and amazing mentorship of Mike Magee along with excellent peers like Charlie Demerjian, Theo Valich, John Oram and others. I was very privileged to be amont this crowd of exceptional people under MM's ownership, then INCISIVE MEDIA UK, and VNU Business Media. When founder and editor Mike Magee moved to his own site TechEye.net I went there too. My work was also featured on LinuxDaily and IT News Australia. https://www.itnews.com.au/author/fernando-cassia-148900 I had a brief stint at Theo Valich's BrighSideOfNews.com and other sites. As of late my work has been published on Mike Masnick's TechDirt.com and Tech Radar Pro UK.
