Biography
Florence Miettaux is a French freelance filmmaker, photographer and journalist based in Juba, South Sudan since 2010. She covers the young African country's peace process and development, as well as its history and cultures, mainly for French newspaper Le Monde and Radio France International (RFI). She has a special interest in topics that have to do with women's rights, cultural and gender norms transformation, peace and reconciliation. Florence also develops archival film projects and documentary film workshops for South Sudanese filmmakers. Before living in South Sudan, Florence studied social science and cinema, in her hometown of Lyon. In 2002, she graduated with a masters degree in sociology and a BA in cinema. Becoming an academic was less attractive than exploring the field of documentary cinema, and she started working professionally on her first documentary film "Exceptions to the Absolute", a 95min feature narrating the two-year campaign of a civil society coalition against the "double peine" in France ("double peine" is a discriminatory measure applied to foreigners in France, that can lead to their deportation although they were staying lawfully in the country). She has also worked as a film editor for Arte documentary series "Architecture" and "Photo", before moving to South Sudan where she was intending to document the liberation struggle's tumultuous history as well as the birth of the South Sudanese nation in 2011. Things worked out differently, and this film project is still ongoing. Meanwhile Florence settled quite happily in Juba. Besides her work with Le Monde and RFI, she has directed documentary films especially through the Juba in the Making project, in collaboration with a wide array of colleagues and organizations, to highlight the South Sudanese people's resilience and creativity to make a better future for their country.
