Biography

Gord Montgomery is a self-taught sports journalist/photographer who worked for 30 years as the only one in that department for two large-scale weekly newspapers before his retirement in 2014. He now focuses on golf course reviews, travel destinations, and resort highlights. His journalism career began in 1984 on a whim and has since blossomed into a love affair with not only the game of golf but the players themselves. Montgomery began his freelance writing work in the 1990s when he wrote for an ice hockey newspaper. He has spent the last 14 years with Inside Golf magazine, a publication that covers Canada’s four western provinces. As well, he has had works published in Alberta Golf’s provincial magazine, airline in-flight magazines, and a national golf publication, internationally he has appeared in The Texas Golf Insider and Leading Courses. He has also written for Tourism Vernon and Tourism Medicine Hat. His love affair with the game of golf began at an early age, nine when a 9-hole round cost all of 50 cents and the greens were made of sand. While he stepped away from the game during his first stint in college, he later became immersed once again in the sport and its culture. Despite that he has struggled to maintain any consistency with his play, noting, “That’s why I get paid for writing about the game and not for playing it.” Montgomery isn’t long off the tee, isn’t deadly accurate with his irons and his putting leaves a lot to be desired at the best of times. As such, he lives by the Lee Trevino quip about on-course behaviour: “You’re not good enough to get mad.” To him, golf is a social/self-competing sport for those classed as weekend warriors, but even so, like everyone that’s ever picked up a club and has that desire to become better. To date, he has one hole-in-one and is always hoping for a second, but now considers himself fortunate to simply hit the green with his par-3 tee shot. He is married to Jane, his constant companion, mentor, and advisor for the past 37 years, and lives in Spruce Grove, Alberta, Canada where the golf season is never long enough.
