Biography

Grace E. Marion came of age in a Pennsylvania town in which the only relevant monument, however absurd, was a puppet-based children’s theme park. She left her town and her position as the Editor-in-Chief of her high school newspaper, the Playwickian, a day before her graduation. Grace backpacked alone for six weeks in Europe that summer, with only one bag, taking trains and buses and footpaths through 13 countries. In the fall, she moved 1,000 miles from home-- alone, to a state her family has never seen-- for a chance to earn her degree in journalism. She began her Bachelor’s degree at the University of Mississippi in the fall of 2018, majoring in both broadcast and print journalism and minoring in Spanish. In September, she had the opportunity to work with the Morning Joe crew while they filmed in her town as a runner; by May, she had an internship arranged at Mississippi Today. She spent eight weeks with the Mississippi Today staff doing the kind of investigative work that made her fall in love with journalism. That summer-- in 2019-- she received a handful of awards for her refusal to accept censorship at her high school newspaper, which has led to a lawsuit in conjunction with the Student Press Law Center in opposition to what is considered by some to be the strictest prior review policy in the nation at a public school, Policy 600. Her more notable work includes a profile on a local family who lost the father to the opioid epidemic, an investigation of the mishandling of sexual assault/harassment reports in a public high school, a profile on the guitarist of Hop Along and a series covering the confederate protests at the University of Mississippi in February of 2019.
