Biography
1.Introduction I am Isack Dickson, a Tanzanian journalist and content producer with a deep commitment to climate justice, governance, and human rights reporting. For over seven years, I have worked at Orkonerei FM Radio (ORS Radio Tanzania), where I produce and host the Nijuze Radio Show, a program dedicated to amplifying the voices of marginalized communities, particularly pastoralists and smallholder farmers affected by climate change, governance failures, and environmental policies. Through investigative reporting, radio storytelling, and collaborations with international organizations, I have covered water scarcity, land rights conflicts, conservation efforts, gender equality, and governance issues. My work has influenced local policy discussions, leading to real-world action in areas such as clean water access, climate adaptation, and women’s rights advocacy. As a journalist, I believe that media should not just report problems but also serve as a tool for change. My goal is to ensure that local challenges are connected to global conversations, making issues such as climate resilience, governance transparency, and human rights protections part of the broader international discourse. 2.Career Journey in Journalism: My passion for journalism began with a desire to bridge the information gap in rural communities. I realized early on that many marginalized populations, particularly Indigenous and pastoralist groups, were often excluded from mainstream media coverage. To address this gap, I pursued a Certificate in Journalism and Radio Broadcasting from Arusha East Africa Training Institute in 2016, later earning a Diploma in Journalism and Broadcasting from Fanikiwa Journalism School in 2022. After completing my studies, I joined Orkonerei FM Radio, one of Tanzania’s most influential community radio stations, as a reporter and content producer. Over time, I became a leading investigative journalist, using radio, digital storytelling, and data-driven journalism to highlight governance failures, climate justice issues, and human rights violations. Some of the key issues I have covered include: a) Water scarcity and climate adaptation – My investigative report on Simanjiro’s worsening water crisis led to government intervention in 2024, improving access to clean water for thousands of residents. Wildlife conservation and land rights conflicts – I have reported extensively on the impact of conservation policies on local communities, examining the benefits and challenges of wildlife corridors and land tenure laws. b)Gender equality and governance – My reporting on women’s participation in governance and early child marriage has helped raise awareness of gender-based injustices, leading to community discussions on policy changes. c)Renewable energy solutions – I have explored how solar power and sustainable agriculture practices can empower rural communities and reduce their vulnerability to climate change. 3.International Collaborations & Key Projects Beyond my work at Orkonerei FM Radio, I have had the privilege of collaborating with international media organizations and NGOs that focus on climate justice, human rights, and media innovation. Some of my most notable collaborations include: a)BBC Media Action (Tanzania Rural Radio Support & National Conversation – NC5) As a lead producer, I worked on BBC-supported projects that trained community radio journalists, developed interactive public forums, and encouraged civic engagement on governance issues. Through these projects, I helped create radio programs that empowered citizens to hold leaders accountable, particularly on resource allocation, land policies, and gender rights. b)World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) – Climate & Conservation Reporting I partnered with WWF to produce radio programs and digital reports that focused on sustainable agriculture, conservation, and climate adaptation strategies. My work helped simplify complex environmental policies and made them more accessible to rural communities. c)Thomson Reuters Foundation (TRF) – AI Newsroom Adoption Project As part of TRF’s AI in Journalism initiative, I explored how artificial intelligence can be used in investigative journalism to track climate misinformation, improve data analysis, and enhance storytelling. This project positioned me as a media innovator in using AI tools to strengthen climate governance reporting.
