Biography

I am a passionate writer and teacher with a Bachelor of Science in Mass Communication from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. My craving for writing and research has been obvious since my undergraduate days, as I served as science and technology editor for two campus publications while I was a third-year student. I also emerged second in a fundraising essay competition organised by the Directorate of University Advancement, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in 2017 -- as a final-year student. The competition was open to all students and graduates of the largest university in sub-Sahara Africa. In an effort to learn while earning, I started teaching English language and literature-in-English at Al-Amin Academy, a private secondary school in Kaduna metropolis. That was immediately after my graduation from university. The job helped me upscale my communicative competence and editing prowess. In 2019, I considered a part-time lecturing job at Al-Hikma College of Education, Ankpa, Kogi State (Kaduna Study Centre), working in the Departments of English and General Studies Education. The role also enhanced my research skills and English proficiency. Propelled by the lockdown imposed on Nigerians due to the outbreak of COVID-19, I created a Facebook page in May 2020 and started teaching fellow Nigerians basic English grammar and phonetics. A year later, I started contributing news stories and opinion articles to "The Daily Reality", an online newspaper with a physical office in Kano. About three months after joining the organisation, my writing prowess improved beyond expectations, and I, representing Kogi State, emerged winner in an inter-state essay and video presentation competition organised by Arewa Genius Hub on Facebook. The competition -- on the concept of food insecurity in Nigeria and challenges facing Arewa -- was for the 19 states that form the North. However, each participant used his/her state of origin as a case study. In July 2022, I became interested in solutions journalism, and owing to my desire for excellence, I participated in a webinar titled "Solutions Journalism for Civic and Early Career Journalists" on the 16th of July, 2022. It was organised by SolutionsPaper and facilitated by Chibuike Alagboso, a solutions-focused health journalist and programme manager at Nigeria Health Watch. Being a fast learner, I wrote my debut solutions story about a month after the webinar, and it was published in October 2022 by Social Voices. However, I still continued to grow as a teacher and, in August 2024, I joined the Nigerian Tulip International Colleges (NTIC). Nonetheless, it was a brief spell, as I resigned after four months to fully develop a career in communication or related sectors. ~ January 8, 2025
