Biography

James LaPorta is an award-winning journalist and photographer based in Jacksonville, North Carolina. He is a former U.S. Marine and a veteran of the Afghanistan war. He has covered a wide array of topics from national security and the Department of Defense to the devastation left in the wake of Hurricane Matthew and political battles between North Carolina and the LGBTQ community. Mr. LaPorta's most recent work has gained national attention, including being cited by members of the House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate. Notably, his reporting on the Marines United explicit photo sharing scandal inside the U.S. Armed Forces led to a feature article about him in The New York Times, which also ran in the print edition of The Boston Globe. Mr. LaPorta would later testify in front of the Congressional Women's Caucus about his reporting while on assignment for The Daily Beast. As a freelance journalist, he has interviewed an eclectic selection of prominent figures, including, but not limited to, General Michael Hayden, General James Amos, Lieutenant General William Beydler, Congressman Walter Jones, Congressman Allen West, Actor Sam Jaeger, Actress Monica Potter, Actress Lauren Graham, Actress Heather Morris, Actor Shia Lebeouf and Screenwriter Adam Simon. His work has been published in The Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, The Daily Beast, The Military Times, Stars and Stripes, The Jacksonville Daily News, Task and Purpose, and Mic News among many other publications. Mr. LaPorta has contributed news and commentary to The New York Times, The Washington Post, CBS News, NBC News and News.com in Australia. He has appeared on MSNBC, CNN, Inside Edition and Newsmax TV to discuss his reporting or trending news topics. While pursuing a career in journalism, he attended the University of North Carolina Wilmington, where he majored in political science, with a minor in journalism — Mr. LaPorta has an undergraduate certification in homeland security with a focus on counter terrorism from the American Military University. Prior to journalism, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps as a infantry rifleman. From 2006 until 2014, Mr. LaPorta worked in multiple leadership billets, serving as a infantry squad leader, a combat marksmanship instructor and an intelligence cell chief. He deployed multiple times to Afghanistan. He is a graduate of several military schools, including the Combat Marksmanship Instructor Trainers Course and Non-Lethal Weapons and Tactics Course through II Special Operations Training Group. Mr. LaPorta holds a Black Belt, First Degree through the Marine Corps Marital Arts Program and is a qualified rifle expert in precision shooting.
