Biography
James LaPorta is an award-winning journalist and photographer based in Jacksonville, North Carolina. He is a former U.S. Marine and a veteran of the Afghanistan war. He has covered a wide array of topics from national security and the Department of Defense to the devastation left in the wake of Hurricane Matthew and political battles between North Carolina and the LGBTQ community. While pursuing a career in journalism, he attended the University of North Carolina Wilmington, where he majored in political science, with a minor in journalism — Mr. LaPorta has an undergraduate certification in homeland security with a focus on counter terrorism from the American Military University. Prior to journalism, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps as a infantry rifleman. From 2006 until 2014, Mr. LaPorta worked in multiple leadership billets, serving as a infantry squad leader, a combat marksmanship instructor and an intelligence cell chief. He deployed multiple times to Afghanistan. He is a graduate of several military schools, including the Combat Marksmanship Instructor Trainers Course and Non-Lethal Weapons and Tactics Course through II Special Operations Training Group. Mr. LaPorta holds a Black Belt, First Degree through the Marine Corps Marital Arts Program and is a qualified rifle expert in precision shooting.
