Biography
I'm James Nani and I'm a reporter for Bloomberg Law. I previously worked at Law360 covering state and local tax developments and at the Times Herald-Record covering various beats in the mid-Hudson Valley. As I see it, my goal is to give readers the information they need to make better decisions and tell stories so people can have a deeper understanding of their community. I'm a records hound that likes to dig through databases and turn up new and interesting information. But I also like to knock on doors and pick up the phone to talk to real people and get what a document can never fully show. And to lean on the late great David Carr, he once talked about young reporters, but I think it can widely apply to all writers: "I don't think people who read your work, who are involved as sources, should be surprised. I often read significant parts of the story to the people that are involved, because I don't want to sit up in the middle of the night and wonder whether I was fundamentally unfair to the person, that I didn't communicate to them what is coming and that they - that they'll be genuinely surprised. I don't want anybody to open up one of my stories and have their nose broken by what they read." As a reporter, you run into some stories that at first glance seem to fit perfectly into a preconceived narrative. But it's good to remember life is rarely so neat. Here's a quote by Ira Glass that I try to remember, whether I'm writing a police brief or a Sunday spread: "Basically, anything that anyone makes…It's like a law of nature, a law of aerodynamics, that anything that's written or anything that's created wants to be mediocre. The natural state of all writing is mediocrity. It's all tending toward mediocrity in the same way that all atoms are sort of dissipating out toward the expanse of the universe. Everything wants to be mediocre, so what it takes to make anything more than mediocre is such a fucking act of will. Anyone who makes something for a living, or even not for a living, if they're really excited about it…You just have to exert so much will into something for it to be good. That feels exactly the same now as it did the first week of the show. That hasn't changed at all. That's the premise of what it takes to make something." Finally, here's a classic to live by: "If your mother says she loves you, check it out."
