Biography
I'm a freelance who writes for local, statewide and national outlets covering an array of issues. I write for local, regional and national publications, including Architect's Newspaper, Arts and Culture Texas, D Magazine, Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Texas Architect, Landscape Architecture Magazine and Quorum Report. My work has appeared in CityLab, INTO (which has since closed), Generation Progress (formerly Campus Progress), Star Trek, Counterpunch.org, Jewish News Syndicate, Houston Chronicle, NPR and the Huffington Post. Before going freelance, I previously was the community calendar editor and a staff writer for the Dallas Voice, a LGBTQ weekly newspaper and an assistant editor and reporter for Truthout.org. I have since ceased covering LGBTQ issues and Texas politics. While at the Voice, my work prompted a lawsuit in Colorado, forced a school board member to resign, and prompted a city to rewrite its nondiscrimination ordinance, among other accomplishments. The criminal justice blog Grits for Breakfast called my coverage of needle exchange legislation during the 84th legislative session "possibly the best." My commentary on that session earned me two awards: I came in second place for a Society of Professional Journalists Fort Worth’s 2016 First Amendment Award for commentary on open government and a Houston Press Club Lone Star Award for internet commentary. They were my first awards since eighth grade.
