Biography
Born and raised in Southern California, Jami [“juhm-ee”] began his journalism career after high school by interning with OC Weekly, a free alternative newspaper distributed in Orange County, writing about his favorite local bands and brands. A citizen of the US, UK and Canada, Jami wanted to study and work in all three countries to gain a global perspective. He studied philosophy and economics at the London School of Economics, where he co-edited the student magazine. He interviewed actor David Suchet and singer Imogen Heap, and asked rapper 50 Cent a question at The Savoy. After graduating from LSE in 2007, Jami attended Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism in New York, where he focused on digital storytelling. For the program’s “RW1” course, he spent considerable time reporting in the Bronx borough. One of his articles was published by the New York Daily News. After earning his master’s degree in 2008, Jami traveled to Kenya to report for a major East African newspaper. For eight months in Nairobi, Jami wrote many articles (including a cover story for Junior Scholastic) and attended press conferences by former UN secretaries-general Kofi Annan and Ban Ki-moon. Jami returned to North America in 2009, interning with Vancouver Magazine (he wrote about preparations for the 2010 Winter Olympics) before joining SmartMoney Magazine back in NYC. For a national audience, he wrote about finance and industry in a skyscraper shared by The Wall Street Journal. He caught glimpses of Rupert Murdoch and Karl Rove in the elevators and cafeteria. Switching gears, Jami attended law school for three years at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, spending one semester abroad in India. He summered and articled with a Bay Street law firm and learned about insurance litigation. After being called to the bar in 2015, Jami moved back to BC to be close to family. He dabbled in criminal defence and personal injury law, but realized journalism was his calling. In 2019, Jami got a chance to return to the journalism profession. He moved to Blaine, WA, a small town on the US-Canada border, and edited the community newspaper. He wrote about cross-border issues, attended city council meetings and received awards from the Washington Newspaper Publishers Association. Jami moved back to BC, where he now lives with his wife. He is currently a real estate reporter with Business in Vancouver. In his free time, he enjoys composing electronic music, having played different instruments since his youth. He believes music can unite the world and bring joy to many.
