Biography

I began my interest in writing in 1965 when I attended the Writer’s Workshop at the University of Iowa. It didn’t work out as I had hoped. I was told by one of my instructor’s after submitting a short story that I should stick to greeting cards and restaurant menus. I left soon afterwards. I pursued academic writing in the fields of English as a Second Language and the History and Philosophy of Exucation. I earned a Master’s Degree in the former field from Columbia University and a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois in the latter. I pursued comedy writing when I was a stand-up comic for 16 years from 1988-2004. I had to write my own material because nobody wants to write for a comic whose income is so meager that payment would have to made in six packs of beer and cigarettes. I wrote a column for a weekly daily, The City Edition, in Denver during the late 1980’s. I also hosted a Saturday evening talk show during the same period for Denver’s KNUS Radio. I am currently writing for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Insight column section.
