Biography
I am a pioneering Singaporean digital enterprise builder who has worked in print and online-only journalism over my 13-year career, with skills in establishing systems, workflows, organising news teams, instituting quality control and contributing actively in business and reporting strategy, apart from constantly honing and improving my own writing, storytelling, networking and relationship-building skills throughout. The first years of my career was spent growing Yahoo's Singapore news team in its heyday (between 2011 and 2015), where I covered four elections (two national and two provincial by-elections), broke numerous scoops and stories, did several investigative features and a number of long-form profile feature interviews in both text and video formats. I won regional awards for my reportage, as well as an internal global editorial award for breaking news coverage. I built further on my leadership, organisation-building and management skills as a founding editor at Mothership, Singapore's third-largest news and current affairs website. Early on from the time I joined in June 2015, I hit the ground running, singlehandedly coordinating operations with teams of freelance writers and photographers, and also managed our microsite assembled within a month and a half by two incredibly talented designer-coders (Teo Yu Sheng and Teo Yu Siang), for Mothership's General Election coverage that year. I am a pioneer producer of Mothership's features and long-form repertoire, starting and helming new content sections and eventually teams dedicated to original, in-depth reporting and interviews. I built Mothership's house style from scratch, organised and assigned resources to numerous purpose-established teams for various editorial functions, created the team's weekend roster system and was a key player in the establishment of the majority of its department-level policies and workflows. I also played a key role in internal and external communications strategy, coaching young writers and editors in managing our external stakeholders, and establishing operating procedures that they could implement easily and impart to new hires. When Mothership's founder and deputy managing director fronted the organisation for an inquiry into the formation of new laws governing the press and online falsehoods, I coached them in answering questions and assisted with research in preparation for it. I am recognised as a nurturing manager and editor, having personally mentored, if not directly supervised, almost all the young editors and mid-level management at the company. As the most experienced news media professional in the company, I imparted my own formal journalistic education and experience in teaching writing, editing, and management skills to my reports, many of whom are now themselves leaders of projects and people. After returning from maternity leave, I helmed a multimedia editorial project called Lessons on Leadership, featuring long-form interview profiles with entrepreneurs, CEOs and business leaders that form the bedrock of Singapore's economy. At Singapore's flagship financial daily, The Business Times, I established workflows, systems, styles, reporting and worked with the newsroom on distribution strategies as Social Media Editor, and currently assist with online user experience and story curation for our online assets, while also managing our Working Life and Leadership content sections.
