Biography
JeanMarie Brownson was born in Chicago to a family that enjoys cooking. JeanMarie graduated from Loyola University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Foods and Nutrition. She studied cooking at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris and in Mexico with Diana Kennedy. After completing her chef’s apprenticeship with the American Culinary Federation, JeanMarie worked as a Test Kitchen Cook for Cuisine Magazine. She held the position of Assistant Food Editor and Test Kitchen Director for the Chicago Tribune for 16 years. As the culinary host for CLTV’s Good Eating television show, JeanMarie cooked alongside Julia Child, Jacques Pepin, Emeril Lagasse, Paul Prudhomme and many other culinary stars. JeanMarie met Rick Bayless while on assignment for the Chicago Tribune. She co-authored three cookbooks with Bayless including Rick Bayless’s Mexican Kitchen, winner of the IACP Cookbook of the Year Award and Mexico—One Plate at a Time, winner of the James Beard Foundation’s International Cookbook Award. JeanMarie and partners Rick Bayless, Manny Valdes and Greg Keller founded Frontera Foods in 1996. Frontera Foods rapidly grew into the country’s leading gourmet Mexican food company. The partnership also created Red Fork Natural Foods, a brand of shelf-stable, gourmet American products. In September 2016, Conagra Brands acquired the Frontera and Red Fork brands and offered JeanMarie the position of Culinary Director. Until August 2018, JeanMarie lead Conagra Brands in all things culinary including product development for many of Conagra’s iconic brands. Since 2008, JeanMarie has penned the Dinner at Home column with original recipes for Tribune newspapers and the Tribune Content Agency. Her cookbook, Dinner at Home, won a 2016 International Association of Culinary Professionals cookbook award. She is a member of the James Beard Foundation, Les Dames d’Escoffier, IACP and Southern Foodways Alliance. JeanMarie received a James Beard Award and multiple writing awards from the Association of Food Journalists. When not cooking or writing, JeanMarie can be found hiking, cycling or culling cookbooks and food magazines for new recipes for her family’s annual cookie bake. She lives and cooks in the Chicago area with her family.
