Biography
I'm a senior news writer and founding staffer at The Trace, a nonprofit outlet devoted to gun violence and policy. Before that I spent eight years at The New York Times, first as a news assistant on the Metro desk, then as a columnists' assistant in the Editorial department. In 2009 and 2010 I was the lead writer for the paper's annual Neediest Cases campaign. From January 2013 to June 2014 I wrote, edited and produced The Gun Report, a daily tally of gun violence victims in America, published by Opinion columnist Joe Nocera. My memoir, "Never Tell Our Business to Strangers," in which I explored my father's criminal past, was published in 2010 by Villard/Random House.
