Biography
My name is Jill Valentino, and I am a suburban mom, wife, elementary school teacher, essayist, and freelance writer. I am married to my always-supportive, stay-at-home dad extraordinaire husband Mike, and have two daughters; one currently in elementary school and one just entering her teens. (Help!) My family currently resides in the beautiful Hudson Valley region of NY, located about two hours north of New York City. In my youth, most of my writing attempts were well-received by teachers and peers, though I didn't write much outside of requirements for school assignments. Though I certainly didn't dislike putting words to paper, I was, at best, ambivalent about the task. One notable exception to my lack of enthusiasm regarding writing involved a creative writing class I had taken during my senior year of college. Initially, I took the course for the "easy A." However, I ended up enjoying both the class and the writing assignments a lot; in fact, tremendously more than I had initially predicted. After producing mass amounts of dry, uninspired research writing for my two master's degrees in education, however, the idea of continuing to write on my own did not appeal to me in the least, and wouldn't for a very long time. Instead, I worked tirelessly to secure an elementary teaching position throughout much of the mid-aughts. Since that time, I've worked as a classroom teacher, an enrichment specialist, and an academic intervention specialist teaching 2nd to 6th grade-aged kids. In 2004, I married my high school sweetheart. Slightly over two years later, our oldest daughter was born. Her sister followed eight years later via frozen embryo transfer after a five-year battle with unexplained secondary infertility put our family completion plans on considerable hold. Back in 2009, a major fallout with a close mommy friend led me one step closer to discovering my passion for writing. To keep our drama away from our then-toddlers, arduous, intense arguments between us occurred mostly over e-mail and text messages. Though the experience of losing one of the dearest friends I've ever had was indeed painful, one bright spot emerged from the obliteration of that friendship. I discovered my writer's voice. Additionally, I learned that I derived much pleasure and satisfaction from scripting my feelings. Being of socially awkward stock, I have always struggled with adequately and appropriately voicing my emotions. However, through the written word, I had discovered the perfect outlet for self-expression. To my surprise and delight, I had, without searching, found my life's passion: to write. In 2015, I finally got down to business and began my freelance career, having fulfilled all my familial and educator goals by that time. I was 37 years old. Since 2015, I have been published in six Hearst digital publications, including Good Housekeeping, Redbook, Country Living, Elle Decor, House Beautiful, and Woman's Day. Additionally, I have written for Mother.ly, and also regularly freelance for Hudson Valley Parent Magazine, distributed throughout the Mid-Hudson Valley of NY. In 2015 I also started blogging, somewhat successfully, even with an intermittent posting schedule and self-promotion of varying intensity. Currently, I am also taking on the daunting challenge of authoring my first fiction novel, a slow paced, yet enjoyable journey thus far. Currently, I am in the process of migrating my personal blog posts to Medium. To read more and to follow me there, please visit http://medium.com/@doublesmom77. At this time, I enthusiastically welcome paid freelance writing opportunities.
