I’m Jimmie Sykes, an acclaimed writer and journalist from the Chicagoland area. I graduated from Western Illinois University in Fall 2018 with a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism and a minor in Sports Broadcasting. During my time there, I had the honor of being the first President of the revived Western Illinois University NABJ chapter, leading its comeback after a six-year hiatus. This experience taught me invaluable lessons in leadership and perseverance, particularly at a predominantly white institution navigating budget cuts and limited opportunities for black creatives. In July 2016, I founded Write to Make it Right—an independent writing organization—on a modest laptop from my dorm room. Fueled by faith and passion, I built the brand into a versatile platform that supports small businesses and major organizations through writing services, public relations, and digital media expertise. With support from the NABJ Chicago Chapter, Write to Make it Right became an accredited media outlet in August 2021, earning credentials to cover Chicago Bears home games. Beyond journalism, the brand also engages in charitable events, photography, and publishing projects such as e-books, comics, poetry, and sports articles. I’m also proud to be a Staff Writer and On-Air Host for iLLANOiZE Radio, Chicago’s leading online radio station. Our platform connects audiences to music, sports, arts, and events from the city and beyond, broadcasting through apps like TuneIn Radio and Apple Radio. At my core, I’m a laid-back person who values humanity, mentorship, and protecting those who embrace me. I believe experience is the greatest teacher, and I approach every challenge with a solution-oriented mindset. The name of my brand, Write to Make It Right, reflects how I aim to create a meaningful impact through storytelling and collaboration.
