Company Info

Bhekisisa

The Bhekisisa Centre for Health Journalism is an independent media organization dedicated to narrative, solutions-based journalism that addresses health and social justice issues across Africa. The name "Bhekisisa," meaning "to scrutinise" in isiZulu, reflects its mission to critically examine public health matters. Originally a health desk at the Mail & Guardian, Bhekisisa became an independent nonprofit in 2019, supported by funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Bhekisisa produces in-depth journalism, offering evidence-based reporting on various health topics. They provide media training for journalists and civil society to foster a new generation of health reporters. The organization also hosts public forums to discuss health issues and produces a monthly TV show called "Health Beat," which airs on eNCA. Their stories are widely distributed through major South African media outlets, reaching policymakers, academics, and activists, and influencing national agendas. Bhekisisa has received recognition for its impactful reporting, particularly in areas like abortion access and health policy during the COVID-19 pandemic.
