Hey, I’m Johnstone Kpilaakaa. 👋🏿 I’m a journalist reporting from the frontlines of conflict, displacement, and humanitarian crises across Nigeria’s Middle Belt. I’m currently Sub-Editor at HumAngle, a leading African newsroom focused on the human cost of conflict and humanitarian issues, where I also head the Standards and Ethics desk. Previously, I covered startups, policy, and venture capital within Africa’s tech ecosystem for Bendada.com (now TheCondia). Outside the newsroom, I mentor budding journalists on storytelling, career development, and personal branding. I also occasionally appear on TV, radio, and elsewhere to speak about my work at HumAngle and the Catholic Church in Africa. My commentary has featured in several outlets, including The Washington Post, Deutsche Welle, Channels TV, and Radio Now. In 2024, I became an MTN Media Innovation Fellow, earning a postgraduate professional certificate in media innovation from the School of Media and Communication, Pan-Atlantic University. Before then, I graduated with a Bachelor’s in Science in Education and Biology at the University of Jos in 2023, where I officially started my journalism career as a campus radio intern. Throughout my undergraduate studies, I was awarded several national media and journalism fellowships by various organisations, including Solutions Journalism Network, TheCable Newspaper Foundation, and the International Centre for Investigative Reporting.
