Biography
I grew up on a farm just outside Portland, Oregon, where, from a young age, I pedaled down a country road to get my family's Oregonian each day. Newspapering is in my blood. I attended Saint Mary's College of California, where I was editor-in-chief of the campus' weekly paper, The Collegian. After moving to Puget Sound and cutting my teeth at the weekly North Kitsap Herald in Poulsbo, Wash., I got a job in nearby Bremerton as the crime and justice reporter at the daily Kitsap Sun. I've been here about nine years and have loved every minute. While the recession and transition from print to online has presented challenges for our industry, I believe we live in a time of tremendous opportunity, and new methods of reporting and storytelling are critical to growing our audience. Our role has not changed: inform and engage the communities we serve. That's what I aim to do in every story I write, picture I take, video I film and social media post I make. I believe that in this day and age of limited resources, we show bias less through how we report than where we choose to shine the light. It is with critical importance, then, to find and develop meaningful stories that impact the community.
