Born in San Francisco, on Haight Street, to hippie parents: Freedom isn't just another word for nothing left to lose; it's also my middle name, as written on my birth certificate. Have used J. Freedom du Lac as my byline since late 1993/early 1994. Was once told it was (is?) the worst byline in journalism. Attended SF public schools, then college at a place that dared to call its teams the Poets, Interned at the Peninsula Times Tribune (12 weeks, 75 bylines, $900 stipend for the whole summer), then at The Sacramento Bee, where I remained for nearly 12 years. Hired at The Washington Post in 2005, to write about music. Now on the paper's enterprise reporting team.
