She graduated from Emerson College with a double major in Film and English, then returned to Emerson for a Master’s degree in Media Studies. She also got accepted to a PhD program in Media Studies at the University of Colorado at Boulder, but she left before beginning her dissertation to pursue interests outside of academia. Julie River started her writing career at 17 when she wandered into a poetry slam and said to herself “Hey, I can do this.” Julie has been on 10 poetry slam teams in three different cities: Providence, RI; Worcester, MA; and Denver, CO. In each of those three cities, she has been the city slam champion at least once. She also represented the Denver Mercury Cafe at the 2011 Individual World Poetry Slam in Cleveland, and served as co-slammaster of the Denver Mercury Cafe Slam for a few years ear in the 2010s. Julie began her career as an entertainment journalist in 2016 when she started writing for Punknews.org, but when editor Jeff Sorley left Punknews to start ThatsGoodEnoughForMe.com, Julie left with him to help him build the new site. She has also written for Looper.com, Out Front Magazine, Comic Book Resources, and New Noise Magazine.
