Biography
I am a writer, filmmaker, broadcaster and lecturer based in London. I have published six books, includling Trans: A Memoir (Verso, 2015), Variations (Influx, 2015), Front Lines: Trans Journalism 2007-2021 (Cipher Press, 2022) and The Woman in the Portrait: Collected Short Stories 2008-24 (Cipher Press, 2024). My journalism, essays and short fiction has appeared in The Guardian, for whom I documented my gender reassignment in a blog entitled A Transgender Journey (2010-12), which was longlisted for the Orwell Prize. I have also written for London Review of Books, Granta, Sight & Sound, Frieze, Art Review, New York Times, The Washington Post, TimeOut, New Humanist, Five Dials, New Inquiry, The New Statesman, Schirn, When Saturday Comes, 3:AM and elsewhere. I have made three short films, screened in galleries and festivals worldwide. I also host Suite (212), a radio programme and podcast that looks at the arts in their social, cultural and political contexts. I teach on the MA programme at the Royal College of Art and finished my PhD in Creative and Critical Writing in 2019. I was included on The Independent on Sunday Pink List of influential LGBT people in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015, and appeared on a panel at the PEN International Congress in 2014. Trans: A Memoir was runner-up in Polari LGBT Literary Salon’s First Book Award for 2016. In 2019, Val McDermid chose me as ten British LGBT+ writers for an International Literary Showcase.
