Biography

I was born in Bombay in 1956 to V Srinivasan and Malati Mahadevan, grew up in the districts my civil servant father helped administer, Akola and Nagpur. I atudied at Bishop Cotton in Nagpur, Cathedral School Bombay, King’s School, Canterbury, Trinity College, Cambridge. I learned much from my parents’ many friends, who Included my late uncle Ramaswamy Iyer, the late Professor GC Bannerjee, the late philosopher Professor KJ Shah (and his friend in Delhi the late Dev Dutt, journalist), the late Foy Nissen, photographer musician and aesthete, the late artist Sudha Gogate, Shirish Patel, the late Charles Correa, the late Krishna Paigaonkar, the late John Lawrence, the late Victor Anant among others. An important influence in Cathedral was Stephanie Ramamurthy who was School Librarian but really helped shape my taste in literature. At King’s Canterbury and was lucky enough to have wonderful teachers, especially RW Harris, Stephen Woodley, “Twiggy” Sugden; my Tutor was CDE Gillespie. What little education I had thereafter was at Trinity College Cambridge, where I still remember the kindness of Anil Seal, the brilliant John Eatwell & my late supervisor JMK Vyvyan, and the company of Attilio Loiacono di Alberi, Jan Herczynski & Stephen Barclay. But my real education began upon my return to Bombay, where I learned so much from my mentor, the late Krishna Raj, Editor Economic & Political Weekly, and his deputies Rajani X Desai and Gautam Navlakha; and the people to whom Krishna Raj introduced me to including Professor Vinod Vyasulu, the late Narottam Shah of CMIE, Professor Amit Bhaduri of JNU, Sumanta Banerjee among others. I wrote in EPW about environmental movements in India, organizing tribals in Thane, urban planning issues, the Afghan war and Afghan history, slumdwellers rights, Indian constitutional law, the Supreme Court, the international aluminum industry and the NALCO project in Orissa (a project run by Professor Vinod Vyasulu. . I worked on the Bombay Slumdwellers case, where again I learned much from Darshana Bhogilal, Navroze Seervai, Yogesh Kamdar; & the late Sidney Pinto, the late HM Seervai, and the late James Swamidasan. I wrote a great deal on slumdwellers rights, in Indian Express, thanks to Hiranmay Karlekar and the late BG Verghese. I also wrote often in Business Standard, occasionally in the gracious late Romesh Thapar’s Seminar, Deccan Herald, The Hindu, Times of India, Statesman, Business India, Frontier Herald Review thanks to CP Chandrashekhar, out of the same office briefly as the marvellous Feroze Chandra and Dattu Hegde, among others. All through the Eighties my greatest friend and companion on many trips was the late Ivan Fera of Sunday Observer (with whom I broke the news in December 1986 of India’s clandestine nuclear weapons programme) and Illustrated Weekly. My other close friend in the profession was Kumar Ketkar now in Parliament. I worked closely in Financial Express with Gowri Gurumurthy. There I wrote about the coming failures in the Indian financial sector (where I was proved entirely correct), the petroleum industry (where I anticipated the decline of production at the premium oil fields due to mismanagement and gross corruption) among other sectors, but for these I was especially well known. I learned a lot about different Marxist perspectives from Girish Srinivasan, & Jairus Banaji. I worked on three projects beginning the late Nineties, namely Indian labour in the Middle East under the British Empire with Geetanjali Gangoli; money laundering and capital flight; and the evolution of the Hindu Right into a fascist movement under the British Empire, writing frequently. I have been Senior Member of Wolfson College Cambridge, Visiting Research Fellow at the London School of Economics, and Adjunct Research Fellow of Monash University. Membership of the Wertheim Study of the New York Public Library thanks to Jay Barksdale gave me invaluable access to many relevant research materials. Thanks to Lalita Panicker I was able to get many op-eds into Times of India. Most recently, thanks to Sidharth Bhatia, I have been writing in thewire.in. I now live in New York.
