Biography
Karl Nerenberg was born and educated in Montreal and has had a long career as an award-winning television and radio producer, director, writer and, most of all, journalist. For 23 years he worked as a TV and radio producer/writer/director and executive producer, in both French and English, for CBC/Radio-Canada. Since 2011, he has been the Ottawa-based Parliamentary Correspondent for rabble.ca. As a filmmaker and broadcaster, Nerenberg produced and directed television series and documentaries in a wide range of genres and on a great variety of subjects - from the plight of the Roma people, to civil war in Central America, to the crisis in South Africa's Apartheid system, to a series of portraits of colourful rural Canadian characters. His work won praise from colleagues and critics, and several national and international awards. At rabble.ca, Nerenberg has reported on refugee policy, the environment, Indigenous affairs, leadership and election campaigns, labour and income support policy, fiscal policy, the environment, electoral reform, Canada-U.S. relations, crises in such places as Nigeria, and much more. Prior to launching a fulltime career in journalism, Nerenberg taught secondary school in the Saguenay region of Quebec, Canada's Mackenzie Delta region (in a Gwi'ch'in community), Montreal, and northern Nigeria. In the NGO sector, he has worked for CUSO, Volunteer Canada and the Forum of Federations. For the last-named organization he founded a journal on the practice of federal governance worldwide and worked on the Sri Lanka peace process. Selected Awards: Best International Documentary Series (1985), from the the international organization of French language television networks), for a series of five television reports, "l'Afrique du Sud: quatre portraits", produced for CBC French network television ("Le Point"). Prix Mireille-Lanctot(1988),with reporter Michele Boisvert, for a report that tells the story of a day in the life of a residential centre for emotionally disturbed children, produced for the CBC French network television program, "Actuel".
