The Whitman Wire

Founded before the turn of 20th century under the name The Pioneer, The Whitman Wire is Whitman College's weekly, student-run newspaper. With a circulation of over 1,200, The Wire serves both the Whitman College student body and its network of faculty, staff, parents and alumni as well as the local Walla Walla community. In addition to publishing a weekly issue of the latest news, arts and sports coverage and student editorials, The Wire publishes several special editions, including Family Weekend, Commencement and Jack issues. The Wire is entirely student-run and serves as an open forum for the student body as well as an outlet for gaining journalistic experience at a school that has no journalism program. The staff receives guidance from a Board of Advisors, a group of campus and community leaders, including Whitman College faculty and staff with journalism expertise as well as members of the Walla Walla Union-Bulletin. The Wire strives to maintain the highest standers of fairness, quality and journalistic integrity and is governed by a Code of Ethics, part of the full Governing Documents of The Wire. The Wire's website has been awarded two Online Pacemaker awards, in 2012 and 2013 and has won four national "Best of Show" honors at Associated Collegiate Press (ACP) conventions in the fall of 2009, spring of 2011, fall of 2012, spring of 2013 and fall of 2013. We have also placed for our print newspaper in spring 2012 and spring 2013.
