The American Library Association (ALA) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1876 and headquartered in Chicago, Illinois. As the oldest and largest library association in the world, the ALA is dedicated to enhancing library and information services and supporting the profession of librarianship. Its mission includes promoting free access to information and advocating for the First Amendment rights related to libraries and their patrons. The ALA provides a variety of services to its members and the library community. These include advocacy on national library issues, education and training programs for librarians, and initiatives promoting intellectual freedom and digital literacy. With a membership of over 47,000, the ALA serves a diverse range of libraries, including public, academic, school, and special libraries, primarily in the United States. The organization is led by an Executive Director and a President, supported by a staff of approximately 300 people.
